The OUR Goals
- Increase visibility for undergraduate participation in research across all areas of academic inquiry.
- Increase opportunities for undergraduate student participation in research across all areas of academic inquiry.
- Incentivize student and faculty participation in undergraduate research.
- Positively affect undergraduate student retention and success through experiential learning.
The OUR Mission
The Office for Undergraduate Research (OUR) has been initiated by the Vice President for Research (VPR) Division. The OUR will be housed under the Assistant Vice President for Research Support. The OUR vision is to promote access, advancement, and excellence in undergraduate (UG) research and scholarly activities. In such, the mission of OUR is to initiate a collaborative network of programs to engage and support UG students’ participation in research and scholarly activities in all areas of academic inquiry. The OUR will strive to increase participation of all undergraduate students in the research process. This includes facilitating relationships between exploratory students and faculty members performing research as well as progressively more competitive experience opportunities such as comprehensive UG research projects.
One of the key underlying considerations to OUR programs will be the UTSA UG students and culture. Students. desire and ability to participate in campus research and scholarly activity during their UG educational experience varies. However, students are more likely to participate in research at some level if engaged early in their UTSA experience with programs developed to increase involvement throughout their time at UTSA. An example of the general guiding idea behind development of OUR programs is represented in the figure at right.
