San Antonio is a unique city, serving as a leader in government and civilian healthcare research through organizations like the San Antonio Military Health System (SAMHS), UT Health San Antonio and The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). These institutions invite you to the third annual San Antonio Military Health System (SAMHS) and Universities Research Forum (SURF), which will showcase the latest research discoveries of trainees, faculty, staff and students from health-related disciplines.

With the theme “Evidence-Based Practice & Research in Healthcare: Encouraging Collaborative Partnerships”, forum participants will have the opportunity to present and share research, practices, policies, and collaborations; earn continuing education credits/units (e.g., CME, CNE); and connect with scholars and practitioners from SAMHS, academic institutions, and public, government, and private organizations and agencies for future education, research, policy, and practice collaborations.
Research, practices, policies, and collaborations will be shared in paper and poster sessions, roundtable discussions, and symposia along eleven focus areas/learning tracks: • Pre Hospital Trauma • Inpatient and Outpatient Care • Technology and Innovation in Healthcare • Preventative Medicine • Personalized Medicine (Precision Medicine) • Public Health/Wellness • Patient Safety • Regenerative Medicine • Medical Modeling and Simulation • Policy, Practice, and Collaborations • Open: author’s work is related to protecting, maintaining, and improving health.

Keynote Speaker: JOHN B. HOLCOMB, MD, FACS

John Bradley Holcomb received his M.D. from the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1985. Dr. Holcomb entered the U.S. Army in 1985, completed his general surgery training in 1991, then deployed with the Joint Special Operations Command for the next decade. From 2002 to 2008, COL Holcomb was the Commander of the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research and Trauma Consultant for the Army Surgeon General. Over the years he deployed in multiple real world operations. He is a three time recipient of the Army’s Greatest Invention award. COL Holcomb retired from active duty in 2008 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Trauma Resuscitation Science from the American Heart Association, the United States Special Operations Command Medal, and the Service award from the American College of Surgery. He has been a member of the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care since 2001. In 2008, Dr. Holcomb joined the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston as a Professor of Surgery. He was named the Director of the Center for Translational Injury Research and Vice Chair of the Department of Surgery. Dr. Holcomb is actively involved in clinical medicine, education, research, entrepreneurship and is a founder of a small health IT company. He reviews papers for more than 25 journals, has published > 400 peer reviewed articles and serves on multiple boards.
