Thanks in part to a VP for Research GREAT award given in 2015, UTSA professor Ethan Wickman (UTSA Department of Music) will debut his new cantata, Ballads of the Borderland, this month in San Antonio.
As a highly regarded composer who regularly receives commissioned work, the $5,000 GREAT award allowed him to focus on this particular project and conduct research, including tapping into the archives of the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures and doing in-person interviews with San Antonio residents on their family history. The 45-minute cantata highlights the panorama of the people of this region and their migration. It addresses issues of identity and family history, through the poetry and words of John Phillip Santos and Carmen Tafolla, both #UTSA faculty members.
Please join the UTSA and San Antonio community at the premiere of this wonderful and unique collaboration.
