UTSA and UT Health Science Center to host SALSI Academy Innovation Forum on Feb. 26

February 24, 2016

Topics will include drug discovery efforts in San Antonio and beyond

Researchers from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) will convene Friday, Feb. 26, at the Health Science Center for the San Antonio Life Sciences Institute (SALSI) Academy Innovation Forum.

The forum will welcome guest speakers who will discuss:

  • prospects of National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in light of a $2 billion increase in NIH funding
  • challenges of university startup companies
  • working with data sets, biomedical research
  • collaboration in drug discovery
  • faculty advocacy in shaping policy and funding support for the life sciences

SALSI researchers from the Health Science Center and UTSA will conduct panel discussions on drug discovery and data analytics.

William L. Henrich, M.D., MACP, president of the UT Health Science Center, and Ricardo Romo, Ph.D., president of UTSA, will welcome the investigators to the forum. Jose Menendez, Texas state senator, will also extend greetings.

The 77th Texas Legislature authorized the creation of the San Antonio Life Sciences Institute in 2003. The University of Texas System, the Health Science Center and UTSA formed SALSI to promote greater scientific collaboration between the two institutions and to increase the research funding base with cross-campus collaborative programs. This program encourages interaction between investigators in support of acquiring extramural, peer-reviewed research funding.

The forum will be at the Health Science Center’s Greehey Children’s Cancer Research Institute, 8403 Floyd Curl Drive, San Antonio, Texas 78229. Media are welcome to attend with an RSVP to Will Sansom at (210) 567-2579.

The event is not open to the public. Researchers may still register at https://regonline.com/2ndSALSIAcademyInnovationForum.
