SURF, San Antonio’s military health conference, returns for sixth year

June 23, 2020

JUNE 23, 2020 — The San Antonio Military Health System, consisting of the 59th Medical Wing and Brooke Army Medical Center, along with UT Health San Antonio and UTSA are hosting the sixth annual SAMHS and Universities Research Forum (SURF) on June 25, highlighting the latest research and discoveries of trainees, faculty, staff and students working to improve health outcomes and readiness.

“While world circumstances have dictated many changes, SURF returns as usual, given its necessity and popularity within the region. Military health, readiness and wellness are a vital component of the country’s national security portfolio,” explained Bernard Arulanandam, vice president for research, economic development, and knowledge enterprise.

The 2020 event, where academia, military and industry intersect, will be virtual via Bulb Digital Portfolios and will include podium poster presentations, symposia and panel discussions. Over 150 abstracts were submitted and 138 abstracts were accepted for presentation at the virtual event. Last year’s event had over 600 registrants and more can be accommodated this year due to the online platform.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg will provide welcoming remarks. Special keynotes will be delivered by Corey Levenson, director of San Antonio Military Medical Innovation, San Antonio Economic Development Corp.; Jenna Saucedo-Herrera, president and CEO of San Antonio Economic Development Foundation; and retired Air Force Lt. Gen. PK Carlton Jr., retired professor of surgery at Texas A&M Health Science Center.

This year has expanded to include tracks on auditory and vestibular health; dental health and dental microbiology; health informatics; artificial intelligence and data analytics; mass casualty care; mental health care and suicide prevention; nursing informatics; patient engagement; precision medicine; regenerative medicine; technology transfer; trauma care, hemorrhage resuscitation and prehospital care; and virology and vaccines.

Continuing education credits will be available for participants. Registration is free. Once one is registered, the details will be sent on how to log into the self-driven conference. To close the conference, there will be a live announcement to name and celebrate the 2020 poster presentation winners.
