UTSA Student Research Expo Sept. 19 to showcase student research, innovation

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) will host an expo to showcase its graduate and undergraduate student research and innovation. The 2013 Student Research Expo will be 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Thursday, Sept.19 in the H-E-B University Center Ballroom (1.104) at the UTSA Main Campus.

UTSA student astronomers use world’s largest optical, infrared telescope

In July, the biggest optical/infrared telescope in the world was put in the hands of UTSA astronomers. For a week, two graduate students, Laura McMaster and Lindsay Fuller, and post-doctoral researcher Enrique Lopez-Rodriguez from the UTSA Department of Physics and Astronomy performed astronomical observations at the 10.4-meter Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) at La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain.

UTSA researcher to play key role in $7.5 million Department of Defense MURI project

University of Texas at San Antonio researcher and assistant professor of mechanical engineering John Foster will play an important part in a $7.5 million Department of Defense contract to advance the understanding and use of a relatively new mathematical modeling theory called peridynamics, which allows scientists to more accurately predict material failure.

UTSA, SwRI® researchers to develop low-cost method to treat fracking water

Researchers at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) jointly announce they are investing $200,000 in new research to develop a low-cost method to treat flow-back water following hydraulic fracturing. Over the next year, the researchers will optimize an inexpensive charcoal product called biochar for the water treatment solution. It will be tested on water samples from the Eagle Ford Shale.
