Q: What are Human Subject Research protocols at UTSA?
A: Human Subject Research protocols are developed and maintained by a committee that reviews and approves human subject research for the purpose of protecting the rights and welfare of those subjects. The Board is charged with the responsibility to formulate and implement procedures to assure the University’s compliance with federal, state and institutional regulations for the safeguarding of the welfare and well-being (physical, mental, social, legal, etc.) of human subjects involved in research projects in which UTSA is engaged or for which UTSA otherwise exercises oversight. http://research.utsa.edu/research-funding/human-subjects

Q: How do I disclose Conflict of Interest?
A: A conflict of interest is a situation in which a “Significant Financial Interest” may directly and significantly affect a Researcher’s professional judgment in exercising any UTSA duty or responsibility or the design, conduct, or reporting of research or sponsored activities. A financial or other interest in an entity external to UTSA (i.e., a Significant Financial Interest; SFI) may not be a conflict of interest. It depends on the actual or perceived influence the SFI has on your judgment as a UTSA employee or affiliate. Click here.

Q: If I start a company related to my research, do I have to inform my Chair and Dean?
A: Yes, Department Chairs and Deans should be aware of any company that is owned by a faculty member. In addition, the Office of Research Integrity should be notified. An outside activity form should be completed and submitted to the Office of Research Integrity. http://research.utsa.edu/ori
