Proposal Development Services

The Office of Research Support (ORS) provides proposal development services and coordinates special program initiatives to bring teams together for large, often multidisciplinary, institutional submissions. We work centrally and with a group of grant development professionals housed in colleges across campus to provide this service to UTSA faculty and staff.

Please contact us if you are:

  • Wondering how to find funding opportunities
  • Thinking about preparing a competitive grant proposal and interested in learning more about the available development support
  • Interested in participating in a collaborative, multi-investigator, large-scale competitive proposal
  • Trying to identify collaborators internal or external to UTSA
  • Looking for someone to help manage your multi-investigator and/or multi-institution project team through the development process
  • Looking for advance review and feedback on your proposal draft
  • Seeking constructive feedback on addressing reviewer critiques for a re-submission or new direction

Proposal Development Services

Our team of proposal development professionals is available to provide general guidance to the campus community, but typically offer more customized, one-on-one consultations and services for those projects that are more complex (i.e., multiple partners, many investigators) or that include larger dollar requests (varies by college/unit).

Read more about our services and view contact information for our grant development professionals here: Proposal Development Services Flyer

While we cannot guarantee proposal success, we strive to foster the development of competitive applications. Early engagement with the proposal development team is critical.

Request for Assistance

Each college and division on campus has a grant development professional assigned to them. Please refer to our Proposal Development Services Flyer for these contacts.

Grant development staff should be contacted with a request well ahead of a proposal deadline. Here are some suggested timelines for typical services:

  • Basic Grantsmanship Editing & Review – at least 2 weeks
  • Letter Drafting or Signature Coordination – at least 2 weeks
  • Gathering of Institutional Data – at least 1 month
  • Project Coordination or Strategic Consultation – 2-3 months

Requests for assistance are prioritized according to several factors including alignment with institutional or college-level strategic priorities, level of funding request, complexity of project or team, multidisciplinarity, timeliness, and current workload/capacity.

Relation to Research Service Centers

Our proposal development services are focused on pre-submission activities such as aligning projects to sponsor priorities, early consultation on project scope or strategy, building a competitive team, and coordinating proposal development activities. Proposal development staff coordinate fully with the UTSA Research Service Centers, who are responsible for review/compliance checks, endorsement, and submission of proposals on behalf of the University. All sponsored project proposals must be routed and submitted through a Research Service Center (RSC). Proposal development and RSC staff work together with investigators as a team to ensure submission of competitive applications.

Other Proposal Development Resources

The Office of Research Support (ORS) offers a variety of other proposal development resources for faculty, staff, and postdoctoral researchers. Resources include
funding search tools, grant writing resources, and workshops. Please contact us to suggest additional resources or to discuss needs specific to your scholarly activity.
