Sponsoring agencies occasionally limit the number of applications/nominations the University may submit for specific grants and awards. When a call for proposals is “limited”, the Office of the Vice President for Research uses an internal selection process to determine which application(s) will be submitted to the sponsor for funding consideration. Limited submission grants should be considered institutional and demonstrate benefits to UTSA.

Department of Defense

AFRL Minority Leaders – Research Collaboration Program

The Minority Leaders – Research Collaboration Program (ML-RCP) was created in 2005 at AFRL. The ML-RCP enables collaborative research partnerships between AFRL and academia that engage a diverse pool of talent in addressing foundational research challenges in support of the nation’s air, space, and cyberspace technology needs. This program is the Air Force’s single largest endeavor with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA)

Established in 1958 as part of the U.S. Department of Defense, DARPA pursues opportunities for transformational change rather than incremental advances. It does so collaboratively as part of a robust innovation ecosystem that includes academic, corporate, and governmental partners. To fulfill its mission, the Agency relies on diverse performers from throughout this ecosystem to apply multi-disciplinary approaches to both advance knowledge through basic research and create innovative technologies that address current and predicted practical problems through applied research.

Office of Naval Research

The Office of Naval Research (ONR) is constantly looking for innovative scientific and technological solutions that can address current and future Navy and Marine Corps requirements. They want to do business with people and organizations with ground-breaking ideas, pioneering scientific research, novel technology developments and first-class support services. ONR announces current areas of interest through Broad Agency Announcements, Funding Opportunity Announcements, Special Program Announcements, Requests for Proposal or Quote, Special Notices, Requests for Information and Seaport-e. Air Force Research Laboratory Minority Leaders – Research Collaboration Program

The objective of the ML-RCP is to enable, enhance, and expand the research capabilities of HBCUs and MSIs through collaborative research efforts with AFRL. Funding opportunities for projects of interest to AFRL range from $50,000 – $125,000 per year.
The AFRL publishes research topics through a Project Opportunity Announcement (POA). Faculty participants respond with a white paper submission. If a white paper is selected, the AFRL invites the faculty participant to submit additional information through a Request for Project Proposal (RFPP). AFRL independently reviews and selects all projects.

ConTex is a joint initiative of the University of Texas System and Mexico’s National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT). Established in 2016, ConTex supports bilateral efforts to enhance academic and research cooperation between Texas and Mexico. ConTex represents a long-term commitment to expand cross-border partnerships and create opportunities to share knowledge relevant to issues of common interest to the United States and Mexico.

The recently created San Antonio Partnership for Precision Therapeutics (SA PPT) is a ‘one voice’ platform for an innovative research program in precision therapeutics that builds on current collaborations and unique strengths across four leading San Antonio-based research institutions: UT Health San Antonio (UT Health SA), The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed), and Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), in conjunction with military/Veteran’s Affairs engagement through UT Health SA’s Military Health Institute (MHI). SA PPT provides a platform to integrate the drug discovery pipeline for new therapeutics with “multi-omic” individualized approaches in precision medicine to address the specific and diverse medical needs of our city’s population, many of which mirror those of populations across the nation.
