What is Discovery Insight?

Discovery Insight is a public website covering the research portfolio of the entire university. It puts UT San Antonio’s research strengths front and center for potential industry partners, prospective students and faculty, and the media, and it opens avenues for connections between students and faculty, business and industry and researchers, and faculty members themselves. Searching by keyword or topic returns profiles of the faculty and researchers working in those areas.

Can I gauge graduate outcomes?

Yes. Academic Analytics has plotted the career progression of the entire population of scholars in each of the 172 disciplines in its database. Combined with information about the degree-granting institution, this gives administrators evidence to assess the effectiveness of Ph.D. programs and supports graduate recruitment. The data can also answer queries from state legislative bodies and others about the outcomes of Ph.D. graduates.

Can I create “what if” scenarios?

Yes. Unit Modeling in the Academic Analytics portal shows the impact of gaining new faculty members with particular characteristics (for example, junior versus senior scholars, or a history of certain types of grants) or losing a faculty member to retirement. You can choose peers and data timeframes to give a meaningful context for the unit and how it practices the discipline. Unit Modeling can also show what a unit’s research activity could become, for instance to make the case for offering a Ph.D. alongside a master’s degree, and gives an objective path forward when engaging potential donors and prospective faculty.
