San Pedro I leverages UTSA’s academic strengths to uplift San Antonio
UTSA today announced San Pedro I as the name for the new building that will house the UTSA School of Data Science. Located at 506 Dolorosa St. along San Pedro Creek in downtown San Antonio, the project’s name recognizes the university’s commitment to the site as a historic and future hub of prosperity for the city.
“The new San Pedro I building is part of a comprehensive plan to evolve the Downtown Campus into an anchor for San Antonio’s downtown development,” said UTSA Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President for Business Affairs Veronica Salazar. “Naming the building after the San Pedro Creek represents UTSA’s commitment to the significance of this place within the San Antonio community.”
Plans call for a second building, San Pedro II, to be located on the other side of the creek where UTSA will expand the learning, teaching and research initiatives that will be taking place at San Pedro I. Together, the two buildings will increase the impact of the university’s efforts on innovation, entrepreneurship and career-engaged learning.
By building up its footprint downtown, UTSA is also increasing its ability to address San Antonio’s immediate workforce needs by connecting its students to the experiential learning opportunities that will give them a competitive edge in the job market.
“Just as San Pedro Creek once connected our city’s earliest inhabitants, the initiatives housed in San Pedro I and II will connect the university’s research and academic programs with the workforce development that is crucial to the continued economic vitality of San Antonio,” said UTSA Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Kimberly Andrews Espy.
As the Downtown Campus grows, it will be increasingly focused on industry and government partnerships, community collaboration, and innovative data research.
“San Pedro I brings together a critical mass of UTSA faculty and students engaged in data-intensive learning, teaching and research in a highly collaborative and connected environment,” said David Mongeau, founding director of the UTSA School of Data Science. “The building creates the space that we need to advance and apply data science with artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, data engineering, robotics and other disciplines.”
