National Academy of Inventors announces 2015 NAI Fellows

December 15, 2015
The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has named 168 leaders of invention and innovation to Fellow status. UTSA Vice President for Research C. Mauli Agrawal has been named a Fellow of the (NAI) for his research and innovation in orthopedic and cardiovascular biomaterials and implants. The honor places Agrawal among an elite group of professionals that includes presidents and senior leaders of research universities, Nobel laureates, National Inventors Hall of Fame inductees and National Academies members.

UTSA joins the National Academy of Inventors

UTSA has joined the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), a non-profit member organization of more than 200 American and international universities, along with governmental and non-profit research institutions. Membership to the organization, which includes more than 3,000 individual inventor members and fellows, is by invitation.

UTSA hosts third annual Innovation Awards

The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) recognized UTSA physics professor Arturo Ayon as its 2015 Innovator of the Year for his productivity, based on his new invention disclosures, filed patent applications, and licensing of his technology, at its third annual Innovation Awards, held on the Main Campus.

Invictus Medical Sells a Device to Help Newborn Babies

Invictus Medical is a homegrown San Antonio biomedical startup focused on improving the lives of newborns.
In 2010, Daniel Mendez, Israel Cruz and Nicholas Flores, all engineering undergraduates at the University of Texas at San Antonio, invented a device, initially called the aqua bonnet, during an engineering senior design class. One of the engineer’s wives worked as a nurse in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and explained the problem about babies developing cranial deformities because of all the pressure on their heads.

UTSA researcher uses speaker foam to repair injured bones

Say you fall and crack your head open, an ambulance takes you to the hospital and a group of doctors fill that hole in your skull with speaker foam? Well, soon that might be possible. Teja Guda, an assistant professor of biomechanical engineering, and Joo L. Ong, chair and professor of biomedical engineering at UTSA, have been working on a product called scaffolding, which is meant to replace bone grafts as a treatment for people who have lost bone matter.

Google’s New, Simplified Patent Search Now Integrates Prior Art And Google Scholar

Google has been a significant player in many facets of the patent world — as a creator, critic, litigator, buyer and big data indexer. Today, it’s taking the wraps off a product that is its flagship in the last of those categories: It’s launching a new version of the Google Patents search, which will now also incorporate related results of Prior Art and Google Scholar citations.

Mobile Stem Care LLC, a company aimed at helping veterinarians treat their patients with the latest stem cell therapies, is the newest start-up to take up residence at the UTSA New Venture Incubator. It joins several other companies that have been in the incubator such as Rochal Industries, Viroxis and Cardiovate.

San Antonio bioscience companies to team up on critical research

Two San Antonio-based bioscience companies — StemBioSys Inc. and Cardiovate Inc. — have agreed to work in tandem on new stem cell research that could have significant implications on regenerative medicine.

Invictus Medical gets FDA clearance for GELShield device

May 4, 2015
San Antonio company Invictus Medical has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to begin marketing its GELShield device to relieve extracranial pressure in newborns.
The company expects the product soon will be used in hospitals’ neonatal intensive care units, where premature babies sometimes stay for long periods. The device is intended to prevent a cranial deformity that can result from prolonged external pressure to one area of a newborn’s head. Studies report a significant increase in this condition since the early 1990s.
