LABORATORY CONSULTATIONS AND EVALUATIONS
The Laboratory Safety Division carries out periodic safety evaluation of research spaces to ensure that faculty, staff, students are working in the safest possible environment and that state, and federal regulations are being followed. The evaluation is also an opportunity to ask questions and utilize the experience of your evaluator to address any concerns specific to your lab or procedures.
The frequency of evaluations depend upon the potential hazard level assigned to the laboratory after a risk assessment in consultation with the Principal Investigator or Laboratory Manager.
Low hazard laboratories are evaluated annually, medium hazard laboratories are evaluated biannually, and high hazard laboratories are evaluated each quarter. Your Laboratory Consultation and Evaluation will consist of the following:
General Safety Overview: Including fire safety, P.P.E, Emergency safety, Housekeeping
Documentation Check: All safety training up to date, laboratory and procedure specific training are up to date and recorded, chemical inventories, SDS and plans are easily available
The checklist for laboratory evaluations can be found below. We encourage labs to conduct periodic self-assessments to promote a strong safety culture.
