SALSI Seed Grant Programs

The San Antonio Life Sciences Institute

Established in 2003, researchers involved in SALSI have driven the expansion of new scientific knowledge throughout Texas and have enhanced the research, teaching and service missions of The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). This collaboration has enabled joint doctoral programs and research projects and has driven initiatives that stimulated the growth of the biomedical and biotechnology industries in San Antonio.

2018 SALSI Pilot Awards for Opioid Epidemic Research

Proposal Deadline: July 6, 2018

The goal of the new pilot funding program under the auspices of the San Antonio Life Sciences Institute (SALSI) is to promote interdisciplinary research focused on strategies addressing the broad themes described in the Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative, a report released April 4, 2018 by the National Institutes of Health. The SALSI leadership identifies topic categories for intramural funding that will leverage study results into an external application in areas the biomedical research community* is investing heavily in response to national public health priorities.

*Applicants seeking funding are not limited to topics under the HEAL Initiative, but to be competitive, are encouraged to reference the particular agency(ies) where additional grant support could be obtained i.e. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Department of Defense.

The total maximum amount to be requested is $50,000 per award ($25,000 per institution). It is anticipated that two projects will be funded.

The RFP with information on how to apply, faculty eligibility and approaching deadlines is attached. RFP will also be available for download on the SALSI funding opportunities page at http://www.utsalsi.org/news-detail/active-salsi-2018-grant-opportunity/.

*Please note that UT Health SA faculty eligibility has been amended, download application package for information.

Research Opportunities on Cibolo Preserve

Faculty from UTSA and their students can now ask for approval for access, for research purposes only, to the Cibolo Preserve, a 500 acre tract just east of Boerne in south central Kendal County. The land is notable for its beauty, variety of flora and fauna, geological features and areas of archeological interest. UTSA, in an effort to aid their researchers, is offering up to $3000 per project to help defray student researcher support, supplies and equipment. If you are interested in a morning visit to the preserve please contact: (210) 458-8228, research@utsa.edu
