What is IRB?

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a committee dedicated to protecting the rights, safety and well-being of people involved in research studies. It plays a key role in ensuring research at UTSA meets high ethical standards, complies with regulations and respects participants’ dignity and privacy.

Specifically, the IRB:

  • Reviews and approves research involving human subjects to ensure it is safe, ethical and respectful of participants
  • Ensures researchers clearly communicate risks, benefits and expectations to participants
  • Provides guidance to researchers, helping them navigate complex ethical and regulatory requirements

By supporting thoughtful and responsible research, our IRB helps build trust between researchers and the community, allowing us to advance science safely and ethically.

The UTSA IRB is comprised of faculty, researchers, scientists and at least one non-scientist member from outside the research community. Together, they create and maintain guidelines to ensure UTSA research follows federal, state and university regulations to safeguard the physical, mental, social and legal welfare of people who participate in UTSA research.

The UTSA IRB’s authority is derived from federal regulations, specifically those set by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services: (45 CFR 46) and the Food and Drug Administration. These regulations require institutions conducting human subjects research to establish an IRB for oversight and compliance.

Accreditation

The UTSA IRB operates under the Federalwide Assurance (FWA) number 00003861, with the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) under the Department of Health and Human Services.
